A Movie Review
Movie: Black Panther
Director: Ryan Coogler
Producer: Kevin Feige
Run time: 2 hr 14 min
Rating: 4.2/5
The movie starts with the history of the setting, Wakanda. Wakanda is a country possessing an enormous amount of vibranium, the strongest metal in existence. This is the reason Wakanda becomes the most powerful country in the world but decides to hide their wealth from the outside. Although it thrives, initially there is a lot of war among 5
tribes living there, after which a warrior finds a heart-shaped herb that gives him enhanced power and abilities. 4 of the 5 tribes unite under him, and he becomes the first king and Black Panther, who is a protector of the kingdom. The 5th tribe, the Jabari tribe, stays isolated.
The plot itself begins when the main character, T'Challa's father the king, is killed and T'Challa is to become the new king and Black Panther. As a ritual, anybody can challenge him for the throne on the day of the ceremony, which is what the king of the Jabari tribe does. T'Challa wins by nearly killing M'Baku, his challenger, but convinces him to give up and live. T'Challa becomes king, and an insight is given to the scientific research and development of Wakanda headed by T'Challa's sister Shuri; it is extensive due to the vibranium they possess.
T'Challa then gets information on the whereabouts of an old enemy of the country, a man called Klaue, who had stolen vibranium from the Wakandans many years previously, with help from T'Challa's traitorous uncle. T'Challa goes on a mission to capture Klaue but fails to bring him back. Instead, he returns with a wounded friend, CIA Agent Ross. Soon, a man who had aided Klaue turns up in Wakanda, with Klaue's body. T'Challa, confused, asks his friend and adviser, Zuri, the truth. Reluctantly, Zuri tells him that T'Challa's father had killed his uncle long ago and left his child behind. The strange man turns out to be this abandoned child, nicknamed Killmonger. He challenges T'Challa for the throne, as is his right, and throws him off a waterfall after severely injuring him. Amid mysteries, losses and betrayals, the plot slowly evolves.
The movie is excellent. The plot, the style, the special effects and the concepts all make it extremely appealing and enjoyable. Furthermore, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has kept up its recently-brought element of humour in this movie too. There is just one thing that could have improved the movie - they could have brought in stronger, more prominent conflicts and from the beginning, because the main problem was brought forward after half the movie was over. Other than that, it was a very good film.
I recommend this movie to all age groups.
